Joycean Perspectives

Settlement Music School | 416 Queen St, Philadelphia, PA 19147

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the publication of James Joyce’s Ulysses, Network collaborates with The Rosenbach to present a new song cycle based on select passages from the novel by Grammy Award-winning composer Lansing McLoskey.

McLoskey’s commissioned song cycle One Book Called Ulysses, featuring mezzo-soprano Maren Montalbano and scored for voice and sinfonietta, will be featured alongside selections from Joyce Cycle by Otto Luening, who worked closely with Joyce in the English Players Company, Samuel Barber's Solitary Hotel, which uses text from Ulysses, and Joyce’s original song “Bid Adieu to Girlish Days.”

Additionally, the concert will feature a discussion with the composer and University of Pennsylvania Scholar Robert Berry, who illustrated a graphic novel adaptation of Ulysses.

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required for entry and mask use required for the duration of each Network for New Music performance.
